Pipe Organs at First United Methodist Church, Martin
In 1915, the first pipe organ of two manuals and ten ranks was installed by Henry Pilcher.
The facade pipes of the 8' Open Diapason can still be seen in the sanctuary today and although not winded, could still play when blown in 2019. In 1972, M.P. Moller installed their opus
10786 of two manuals and fifteen ranks behind the old Pilcher facade in the center of the chancel.
In 1993, a sanctuary renovation included the expansion of the Moller organ. Milnar Organ Company
added 3 new ranks and moved the organ into new chambers on either side of the chancel, using the
Pilcher facade pipes. In 2004, Milnar added 2 new ranks and also added a 16' Contra Trompette stop in
the pedal division with 12 new pipes. In 2014, some work was done on the aging console. In 2019,
the church purchased Schantz opus 616 from the City of Covington. The organ was oringinally installed
in 1964 at First Baptist Church in Covington, TN. In 2011, First Baptist built a new facility and moved
out of the downtown building. Milnar Organ removed the Schantz, updated the console with a new Peterson
ICS-4000 control system, and combined the best parts of the Schantz with the existing Moller and
Milnar chests and pipes. The Schantz Great/Choir/Pedal chests and pipes fit like a glove in the
chamber with enough room for a future Festival Trumpet in the Choir division. A new chest was built
by Milnar and the Schantz Gemshorn was made playable in the Choir division. The Schantz Swell strings
were used in place of the Moller strings and the Dolce and Celeste that were installed in 2004 moved
into the Swell chamber. A new 1 3/5' Tierce was also installed in the renovation project. Enough room
was left in the Swell chamber for a future III Plein Jeu stop. The voicing of the Schantz and Moller
was very similiar, which provided a very good end result - a flexible instrument with plenty of color
that fills the room nicely. A dedication concert will come at some point in the coming months.
